— A collaborative video installation

“This possibility of thinking in reverse and of suddenly reviling one’s thought. This dialogue in thought.
The ingestion, the breaking off of everything. And all at once this trickle of water on a volcano, the thin,
 slow falling of the mind”

Music: Weeknd Remix by Sticky Vicki

An imagined reality appears on a screen… as a consensus…a consensus an audience also accepts
when they enter a theatre to see a play, and, for a time, can pretend that what they are seeing is real.

We present a collaborative video art installation, pertaining the characteristics of a hidden cinema,
mirroring the creators emotive, engaging viewers in the dark space. Exploring subjects such as the
abyss, mythology, eroticism, life &#38; death….the beauty of mystery… a menacing dream…

WALT DISNEY THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY...

'Known to some as ‘Uncle Walt’ and to others as ‘Hollywood’s Dark Prince’, it seems there are conflicting images of the man recognised by all as Walt Disney. An American hero, an FBI spy, an artistic genius,
an anti-Semite - a man of harsh extremes: a character almost as polarised as his own animations.

Wandering a no-man’s land between man and mythology, unearthing Walt Disney has become something
of a cultural obsession. As one of the most illustrious names in the history of our modern world, and yet
with very little substantiated about him, is it any wonder that we feel the need to look into the very core
of the man in search of some human characteristics?

Charles Solomon’s respected 1989 work The History of Animation notes that Walt Disney was, ‘a human Rorschach test: everyone... saw something different in him.’ And while this may be true, it seems that
Walt Disney inspires a divide between those who want his virtues and aesthetics preserved; and those
who want to look beneath the dazzling veneer.'

-Tara Gardner, Untouched: New Work On The Theme Of Walt Disney (excerpt from the exhibition catalogue)

I was really psyched when Lyna, the creator of LURVE magazine asked if she could use some of my images from the Dark Horses show in the summer. After talking about which images she liked, I reworked them for a double page spread. It was a total honour to have something included on the same pages as the likes of Chadwick Tyler, Terrence Koh and the lovely Anna Peaker.

The curators of MASS commissioned me to create a responsive piece to the new documentary
Project Nim for a group show at Recession Studio. In association with LEISURE and ICON.

‘The Devil’s Theory, Probably’, a response to Project Nim. Footage taken from Bresson's
'Le Diable Probablement' and Pasolini's 'Teorema', with manipulated audio composition.

In 'Le Diable Probablement', a young man who, realizing that he cannot support the world as he finds it, nor hope to change it through revolution or religion, nor adapt it through psychoanalysis, chooses the way of the ultimate dropout- suicide. It presents the viewer with an age that, like the hero, Charles, is systematically destroying itself, in preposterous arrogance and innocence.

'Teorema' is the story of a family that is suddenly visited by a young man who systematically proceeds to seduce them en-masse. Having provided each member of the household with an apparently transcendental experience, the young man departs, leaving each to collapse in their own way. Unable to endure the void in their lives, their collapses are elegant and terrifying: the daughter withdraws into a catatonic state.

Herb Terrace, is not dissimilar to the protagonist in either film.

Let's Wrestle were after a performance video homage to the likes of The Adventures of Pete &#38; Pete, and videos by bands like Superchunk, The Breeders and all our favourites growing up. Basically an excuse for a lo-fi non-adventure in Wes' gadren.

STUDENTS, PATIENTS, PAUPERS: THE MANY LIVES OF THE ST PHILIPS BUILDING

I was asked to adapt a recent series of images (originally commissioned by Slashstroke Magazine) to be exhibited as a video installation for Students, Patients, Paupers: The Many Lives of the St Philips Building.

“There is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream, a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought –a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities!” – Mark Twain

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-A_o.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-A_o_o.jpg" data-mid="16918596"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-B_o.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-B_o_o.jpg" data-mid="16918594"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-D_o.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-D_o_o.jpg" data-mid="16918593"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-C_o.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/FAUXZEN-350dpi-C_o_o.jpg" data-mid="16918591"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The subjects in the images would be considered fallen women, prostitutes and drug addicts booked for various offenses, much like those seen at St Philip's during it's incarnation as a clinic treating venereal disease. Officially, it was never meant to service women 'of a very depraved class', such was the koan of St Philips.

My interpretation of the brief focuses on a moment of clarity, calm, or perhaps even resignation, when in
an adverse situation. A melancholy example of this can be seen in many mug shots, their subjects seem
to transcend their surroundings when staring, glassy-eyed, into the lens. This paradoxical scenario, which I wished to illustrate visually by juxtaposing the images against serene landscapes, as far removed from their reality as possible.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/IMG_5739.jpg" width="600" height="900" width_o="600" height_o="900" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/37131/1407301/IMG_5739_o.jpg" data-mid="6858465"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Introduction to the exhibition:

The St Philips building on the LSE campus is slowly being emptied of its contents. Knobs are
disappearing from the doors, bookshelves lie exposed and a new light pours in from the bare
windows. It would seem the life of this hundred-year-old building is at its end.

St Philips began its service in 1903 as a Poor Law workhouse, replacing a similar institution which was
levelled to make way for the passage of the Kingsway boulevard. During World War I, the building served
as an observational facility for refugees. And in 1919, under the auspices of the Metropolitan Asylum board,
St Philips became the Sheffield Street Hospital for woman and girls with venereal disease.

During the 1930s and 40s the hospital was converted into a facility for the study and treatment of urology
and nephrology. After being amalgamated into the newly formed NHS, the hospital was renamed St Philips
but continued as a specialist hospital until the 1990s when it was acquired by the London School of
Economics and Political Science.

A scattering of overhead projectors, the dishevelled notice boards and the mound of institutional-looking
chairs, which have been piled into one of the ground-floor rooms, still speak of St Philips as an educational building of classrooms, study spaces and closed-door offices. Before long, a newly built student centre will occupy the place where this burly red brick edifice once stood.

In the wake of this history, this exhibition hosts 20 commissioned artworks and performances, alongside historical and archival materials that seek to consider in broad ways the life and present condition of this building. Alongside the curated exhibitions, we host a series of walks, talks and screenings related to the building’s history, as well as critical debates about destruction and creativity in the city.</description>
